TSC will use the grant to improve the way farmers report to manufacturers and suppliers, ultimately making the industry more sustainable and readier for future challenges.

Canadian Climate Change Program Promises Big Impact
In the Quietly Making Progressive News department . . . our eminently sensible neighbors to the north are engaging in innovative research into sustainable agriculture. The federal Canadian government is sponsoring 20 new projects with the CD$27 million Agricultural Greenhouse Gases Program (AGGP), a partnership with universities and conservation groups across the country, reports Markets Insider. The goal? “The program supports research into greenhouse gas mitigation practices and technologies that can be adopted on the farm.” The AGGP investments support the Global Research Alliance (GRA) on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases, a group of 49 countries working to find ways to grow more food without growing greenhouse gas emissions. (Agriculture, along with forestry, account for 30% of global GHG emissions.) Innovative, collective, government-backed action to deal with climate change: anybody in the US polity interested?

The Golden State also has led the way in taking care of the environment. The state has a renewables portfolio standard of 33 percent by 2020 and 50 percent by 2030. An executive order in 2005 established a target reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. A bill in 2006 created an economy-wide cap-and-trade program.

Report authors Mark Lee and Aiste Brackley asked the question to a range of professionals from business, government, NGOs and academia to create a picture of what we have achieved collectively.

Currently, the national recycling rate is 34 percent, up nearly 10 digits from 1995, when the rate stood at 25.7 percent. This is the result of a collective effort to be more sustainable.

Large agro-based companies need to continue to encourage crop diversification, the application of new technologies, and the development of agro-forestry models as a priority for farmers to improve their resilience.

Food loss or food waste is the decrease of food in later stages of the food supply chain intended for human consumption; for example, harvested bananas that fall off a truck are considered food loss.
