Brands Taking Stands: A CEO Explains How Principles Matter
The CEO of Merck, Kenneth C. Frazier, has spoken up about the statement he made last year when resigning from the President’s American Manufacturing Council. Following the white nationalist violence in Charlottesville, Va., the grandson of a man born into slavery said at the time, “As CEO of Merck, I feel a responsibility to take a stand against intolerance and extremism.” (Frazier was responding to President Trump’s comment about finding fault “on many sides.”) After his resignation, other CEOs also resigned and the advisory councils were disbanded. The story is a reminder that it's becoming business-as-usual for companies to speak out on social and political issues.
