How is today’s military community changing—and what does this mean for the career growth and mobility of military spouses? How can community connections on and off the base support military spouse career growth and mobility?

Booz Allen joined other industry and government leaders in this space to explore these questions and more at the third annual Hiring Our Heroes Military Spouse Employment Summit and Inaugural Military Spouse Impact Awards Dinner, of which the firm is a platinum sponsor.

New fellowships for military spouses

During the Summit, Booz Allen Executive Vice President Andrea Inserra announced Booz Allen’s sponsorship of Hiring Our Heroes military spouse fellowship program,  becoming the first corporate sponsor to fund 100 corporate fellowships exclusively for military spouses.

Hiring Our Heroes, a nationwide program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, created the program to connect military spouses to paid six-week internships in order to relaunch a career or gain valuable experience that will take their careers to the next level. Booz Allen and other corporations who accept the fellowship recipients provide selected candidates with exclusive on-the-job training.

Also speaking at the Summit were Booz Allen Vice President Cathy Breeze and Head of Military and Veteran Affairs Laura Schmiegel. Breeze joined a panel discussion on the “war for talent,” while Schmiegel talked about the evolution of military communities.

An inaugural award recognizes lifetime impact

At the awards dinner, Booz Allen and special guest Dr. Jill Biden presented Sheila Casey with the inaugural 2019 Impact Award for Lifetime Achievement. The award recognizes a person or entity going above and beyond the call of duty to help promote and protect economic opportunities for military spouses.

Casey was lauded for her dedication to military families at the height of conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq during her husband Gen. George E Casey’s tenure as the U.S. Army Chief of Staff, and her work as chairman of the board of Blue Star Families—all while managing a full-time career as an accountant. She currently works as chief operating officer of The Hill, a leading publication covering congressional news.

A proud tradition—and track record

The Summit and Awards Dinner was hosted by Hiring Our Heroes. Booz Allen has been a member of Hiring Our Heroes’ Military Spouse Employment Advisory Council since 2013, currently serves as chair of the council, and has won the Military Spouse Employment Award twice since joining the council. To date, more than 31,000 veterans and military spouses have obtained employment opportunities through Hiring Our Heroes events.

“Booz Allen is proud to lead the business community in supporting military spouse career growth and mobility,” said Inserra. “We’re committed to helping military spouses build and sustain their careers where military life takes them, and we’re excited to see what the future brings as we expand our community and reach.”
