Brunswick Action Team Captains score a trip to Fenway

As part of Players Trust and Volunteers of America’s Action Team recognition efforts, Brunswick (ME) Action Team Captains recently attended a Boston Red Sox game, including pregame batting practice.

The Brunswick Action Team used their trip to historic Fenway Park as an opportunity to chronicle their activities throughout the school-year by producing their very own Action Team highlight video.  And as you’ll see in the video, the Brunswick Action Team sure had a busy and productive year.

During the year, the Action Team Captains joined forces with their special needs classmates to form a dynamic Unified Basketball team. In Unified Sports, students with or without developmental disabilities train and compete together to create a strong and understanding relationship. Together, the Action Team Captains and their classmates went undefeated until losing by two points in the regional semi-finals.

Last November, the Brunswick Team Captains boarded a ferry to Peaks Island, off the coast of Maine, to assist the residents of Volunteers of America’s Fay Garman House. The senior housing facility needed help “winterizing” their cherished flower and vegetable gardens. Aviva Golan, resident and garden expert, helped direct the crew and watched in amazement, saying, “It was a very successful day. It was a pleasure to meet all the Action Team members. They worked diligently. Without the numbers of helping hands, we wouldn’t have accomplished all the tasks at hand; the garden was put to bed for the winter in wicked good time.”

The Brunswick Action Team Captains regularly dial in to our monthly conference calls and were November’s featured school, when we learned that they organized weekly food drive collections, fall clean ups, and pumpkin painting donations.

In honor and recognition of their efforts, Team Captains across the country will soon receive certificates of achievement signed by a Major Leaguer. Their commitment to the Action Team program continues to create a positive impact in their communities and their passion serves to inspire others to get involved.
