How Chemical Management Is Affecting Global Business

Canada has been pushing chemical management within the past ten years. This initiative is aimed at reducing the risks posed by chemicals to Canadians and their environment. Phase one of this initiative was launched in 2006 while phase 2 was launched in 2011. According to Christine Norman, director of Health Canada’s Substances Risk Assessment Bureau, phase 3 is set to launch this June (via an article released by Chemical Watch this week).

Each phase has come with it’s own impact towards streamlining chemical management in Canada. Here is a rundown of the impact of each phase:

Phase 1 - This phase took immediate action towards regulating chemicals on December 8th, 2006. Approximately 8,000 chemicals were classified toward high priority for action.

Phase 2 – This phase focused on health and ecological risks within grouping of chemical substances; initially within an Aromatic Azo and Benzidine based substance grouping. This initial grouping took place on June 5th 2010 and later added 8 more groups on October 8th, 2011.

Phase 3 – I set to include the evaluation of 1,550 substances, which are the last of the 4,300 additional substances that will be identified under Canada’s prioritization process requiring health and ecological assessment.

Chemical management has been constantly evolving within the past ten years in Canada. These changes are set to change the landscape of how modern business is run.
