GRI Standards Now Available in Simplified Chinese

Hundreds of GRI reporters are now working in Chinese-speaking regions, and their numbers continue to grow. To support their work, GRI is launching its Simplified Chinese Translation of the GRI Standards, in time for the next reporting cycle.​

​Sustainability reporting has been a growing trend in China for at least a decade. The business case made by pioneering companies who use GRI’s reporting framework has inspired a new wave of first-time reporters to continue their use. This, paired with the Chinese government’s commitment to sustainable development as incorporated in its policy, has made it increasingly important for companies to report on their triple bottom line.
 
China has expressed its commitment to sustainable development through its 12th and 13th Five-year plans, the unveiling of the Belt and Road Initiative, and the government’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To support seasoned and first-time reporters alike, GRI launched the Simplified Chinese translation of the GRI Standards in January 2018.
 
Better business, improved communication, and a robust reporting community

The benefits of using the GRI Standards are many, according to reporters throughout China. As Achilo Lee, from Sanofi China said, “When applying the GRI Standards, we took a thorough and close look at the management approaches and relevant disclosures of our material topics, which drove us to re-evaluate how we manage those topics and their impact.”
 
And the translation will make this easier still, according to BMW Brilliance Automotive Ltd., “the launch of the simplified Chinese translation of the GRI Standards allows local users to better understand the methodology and improve their report quality. It will serve as a critical tool to continue to align our sustainability strategy with the UN SDG agenda.”
 
For China Mobile, the Chinese translation of the GRI Standards can “contribute to more and better sustainability reporting in China, and China Mobile will continue to support a robust sustainability reporting community in the region.”
 
With the new Simplified Chinese translation, we believe even more organizations in Mainland China and other Chinese speaking regions will be able to benefit from reporting.
