National Grid Makes Presidential Pledge to Hire Veterans
Dear Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden,
On behalf of National Grid US, we are pleased to announce our participation in the Joining Forces initiative to support veterans, military families, and their communities. As part of our commitment to Joining Forces, we will make a good faith effort to hire veterans and military spouses to fill 10 percent (approximately 100 positions) of National Grid’s Gas Operations vacancies over the next five years. As part of our efforts, we will publicize our job vacancies on the Veterans Employment Center and provide our hiring professionals with training in military skills and culture.
In order to support our programs for veterans, National Grid employs a dedicated specialist (a veteran himself) who focuses on veteran recruitment and veteran programs such as the Troops to Energy Jobs initiative, our Veteran to Veteran buddy program and the Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG). Joining Forces will be a great addition to our Veterans hiring efforts. More information can be found here.
Our Veteran to Veteran (V2V) ‘buddy system’ provides new veteran hires with the resources and support to successfully transition from the military to National Grid. These new hires are each assigned a ‘buddy’ in their location who has a similar background and who can offer ongoing advice and guidance.
Nearly 250 members strong, VERG’s mission is to foster an environment that provides opportunities for professional development and community building. It also creates a network of veterans and patriots who help the recruiting team, and also has a strong community presence through volunteering and participating in charitable fundraisers.
We are committed to creating not just jobs, but careers, for our military veterans, military spouses, and members of the National Guard and reserves. Our industry needs the talent and leadership that they bring to bear, and we look forward to working with Joining Forces, the federal family and our industry partners to help them build on their experience to qualify for the high skills careers of the future.
