Campaign: Action Team

Nationals players Aaron Barrett, Craig Stammen and Michael Taylor joined Action Team high school volunteers this week to give a fresh coat of paint to a playground that serves an apartment complex for low-income families.

More than 80 kids live at the Eastern Avenue Apartments, an 88-unit complex for low-income families that is operated by Volunteers of America’s Chesapeake affiliate. While the paint was drying, the players and Action Team Captains joined the kids in games of wiffle ball, basketball and jump rope.

The event on Wednesday, June 24,  which also served to kick-off the VOA Chesapeake affiliate’s summer-long Operation Backpack campaign, featured a barbecue of  hot dogs and hamburgers as well as snacks and drinks for all participants, the kids and their parents.

Through donations, Operation Backpack provides backpacks, school supplies and funding for academic enrichment to more than 2,000 homeless and underprivileged children in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia.

VOA Chesapeake strives to ensure these children achieve success despite their circumstances. For more information on how you can help please click here.
