The Mimika Sports Complex (MSC) will be renovated in preparations for the 20th National Sports Week with contributions from PT Freeport Indonesia.

The National Sports Week is a multi-sport event held every four years in Indonesia. The participants of this event are athletes from all provinces of Indonesia. This will be the first National Sports Week ever held in Papua. The event will be held in October 2021.

Until recently, the MSC has been used by the Mimika Administration’s Task Force as a quarantine location for COVID-19 patients.

PT Freeport Indonesia financed the $33 million construction of the sports complex in 2013. The sports complex was built in an effort to foster world-class athletes in Papua. The sports venue is composed of an indoor stadium, an open air stadium, an athlete dormitory and other supporting facilities. The indoor stadium can hold 5,300 spectators. The outdoor stadium holds 3,500 spectators for track and field events.
