World Water Day occurs every year on March 22. It’s an opportunity to pause and acknowledge what we believe all year long––safe, unpolluted water is a cause worth fighting for. This year, we are thinking a lot about how necessary clean water is to our health.

Our environmental partners, working on the front lines all across the country to protect our water resources, are thinking about this too. Hear from two of these organizations’ leaders about their commitments to protecting Americans’ water and health during these extraordinary times:

“Water. Always important, but even more so in the age of coronavirus. From washing your hands more to having access to clean water during quarantine, we are reminded of our dependence on this incredible natural resource — and we redouble our mission to protect it.”

–Heather Taylor-Miesle, Executive Director, The Ohio Environmental Council

“Our Great Lakes communities are heading into uncharted waters as the COVID-19 pandemic evolves. This is a stark reminder how critical clean water is to our personal health, and the health and safety of our families and our communities.”

–Joel Brammeier, President & CEO, Alliance for the Great Lakes

In addition to social distancing, one of the simplest and most effective ways* to prevent the spread of coronavirus is washing your hands with soap and water for 20-30 seconds. This is true at home and in the workplace, and even more so in healthcare settings like hospitals and doctors’ offices.

Of course, handwashing requires safe water flowing from your tap. All of our National Partner Network members continue working to make sure that water keeps flowing, on World Water Day and always.
