Celebrate DNA Day With No-Cost Virtual Learning Resources Provided by Illumina

Over 65 years ago, DNA was discovered by Rosalind Franklin, Maurice Wilkins, James Watson and other colleagues. Today, their discovery is the cornerstone research on which life-saving cures to disease, cancer, and more is based.

To celebrate DNA’s importance, teachers, students, and their families are invited to join in the observance of National DNA Day on April 25, 2020. Recognizing both the discovery of DNA and the successful completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003, National DNA Day provides educators, students, and families the dedicated day and resources to dive into the fascinating world of genomic research.

From the comfort of home, students and families alike can unlock the power of DNA through a suite of no-cost resources provided by DNA Decoded. DNA Decoded is an initiative created in partnership with the Illumina Corporate Foundation and Discovery Education to equip middle and high school students with the power to unlock genomics and apply them to the real-life problems of today and tomorrow.

Crack, investigate, and explore the genomic code with on-demand lesson plans and dynamic digital content. Supplement existing science sessions with downloadable educator guides chocked full of free resources designed for the virtual classroom. Turn to the “Disease Detectives” activity in which students can explore how epidemiologists track disease and work to stop outbreaks while gaining insight into the array of careers available. Understanding DNA empowers students to understand how genomics can be utilized to help halt the spread of diseases, including COVID-19.

DNA matters. Now, educators have the materials needed to show that fact in a fun and engaging manner!

The full suite of DNA Decoded resources are now available at dnadecoded.org and through Discovery Education Experience in the Corporate Education Partnerships channel and the DNA Decoded channel.

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, Discovery Education is offering schools and school systems not currently using the company’s digital services free access to Discovery Education Experience. Schools accepting this offer will have access to Discovery Education’s dynamic K-12 learning platform and its ready-to-use digital lesson plans, activities, and standards-aligned resources through the remainder of the school year. In addition, Discovery Education is offering a suite of no cost resources for parents and caregivers called Daily DE that can be used at home.
