Traditionally, the underlying goal of any compensation structure has been to attract, motivate and retain good staff.  However, choosing the right compensation structure to achieve a specific business objective can be difficult, especially when business drivers are not aligned with the desires of the key individual a company is seeking to retain.  The question becomes: how do companies align business and individual interests?    Could business sustainability provide the answers?  

Despite the myriad of compensation options, pay for performance is often the one which receives the most attention.  Performance pay is a combination of base pay with variable compensation based on certain performance criteria. It is a widely used in particular industries, based on the concept that pay can motivate job performance, increase employee effectiveness, and align business goals.
