At Comcast we are committed to sustainable innovation, particularly innovation that empowers us to manage the energy we use and the emissions we create so we can to reduce our carbon footprint. That’s why we are excited to support the Adaptive Power Challenge, created to underscore our industry’s individual and collective commitment to reduced energy usage and overall sustainability by encouraging innovations in energy management and, specifically, finding ways to adapt the amount of power we’re using by not using it when it isn’t needed.

Demand for our services ebbs and flows during the course of a day, and there are tremendous opportunities to leverage those natural patterns to support more energy-efficient operations.

Produced as part of the SCTE/ISBE’s Energy2020 program, the Adaptive Power Challenge hopes to spark energy efficiency innovation ideas in three vital areas:

  • Monitoring & Measurement – because if you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it;
  • Demand Response – because we need innovative techniques and mechanisms to reduce overall network loading; and,
  • Supply & Control – because we’d like to identify new ways to control consumption as it relates to DOCSIS-based devices, like cable modems, gateways, and their respective headend controllers.

The Challenge is open to companies, academics, innovators and scientists who want to propose new approaches to managing broadband energy consumption. Two $10,000 prizes will be awarded to winners selected by a panel of industry leaders that includes representatives from Comcast, Liberty Global, Cox, and Canada’s Rogers and Shaw, as well as other organizations.

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers and International Society of Broadband Experts is the ideal organization to host this challenge, with its strong focus on innovation and technology transformation.
