Connect To Good

Prom is one of the most memorable moments of a high school student’s life. During prom season, young people around the country are looking for a dress or tux to impress. But for many, the experience is out of reach. So, TLC, which is part of the Discovery Communications family of networks, AT&T and many other supporters teamed up to change that by offering over 300 deserving high school students the prom of their dreams.

As part of the SAY YES TO THE PROM initiative, more than 150 AT&T employees were matched with impressive young ladies and young men as prom consultants throughout a full day of transformation. Our volunteers were not only able to provide advice about school, career, and other aspirations, but also helped the students navigate through thousands of dresses, tuxes, shoes, and accessories. Participants also received hair and make-up lessons, along with one-on-one fashion and beauty advice from Monte Durham, fashion director and star of TLC's Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta.

Students in five cities: New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, Dallas and Silver Spring, Maryland were able to participate in this all inclusive experience. My colleagues and I were moved by the stories of these students overcoming obstacles to succeed in school. It encourages me to know that while prom is a deserved celebration for all that students accomplish during high school, it’s just the start of their promising future.

Make sure to mark your calendar for the one-hour SAY YES TO THE PROM special airing on TLC on Friday, May 20 at 9:30 ET/PT. I promise it’s worth a watch. It will bring back memories of how you felt during prom: confident and ready to take on the world.
