General Mills Launches Progresso Vegan Soup
(3BL Media/Justmeans) - A plant-based diet has many benefits. It's sustainable, since the ecological footprint of plant crops is lower; it's healthy (just ask your mom); and it's ethical, as many people object to killing animals. In order to help consumers achieve the recommended daily serving of five portions of vegetables, Progresso, the top-range soup line from General Mills, has launched a range of vegan soups called Good Natured with three-quarter cups of vegetables per serving.
The company made the announcement on Monday and it broke the internet. Many websites and health food advocates welcomed the move and the clear vegan labelling. "General Mills could have simply made meatless soup varieties to appeal to consumers pursuing a more plant-based diet, but the company went one step further to also remove the dairy ingredients that could alienate vegans and consumers with lactose intolerance," wrote Food Dive.
Good Natured vegan soups come in three flavors: Hearty Tomato with Spinach and Roasted Garlic, Hearty Corn and Chipotle Chowder, and Hearty Lentil with Garden Vegetables. All of them are 100 per cent vegan and use different bean bases and vegetable purees to achieve their creamy texture with no dairy ingredients. Good Natured soups also free from preservatives or colors from artificial sources.
“We know that consumers are more interested in plant-based diets. With Good Natured soups, we’re celebrating vegetables and showing that beans are not boring and lentils can be fun,” Roger Galloway, Progresso marketing manager, said in a statement. “Whether you start your Mondays going meatless or recently started pinning vegetarian inspiration, our unique flavors will satisfy your hearty appetite.”
