Hershey Allies With The Ferrero Group For Stronger CSR

Chocolate powerhouse, Hershey, is joining with The Ferrero Group for warehouse, transportation and distribution services as well as creating stronger corporate social responsibility initiatives.

"Ferrero is a respected international company with a portfolio of successful brands, including Tic Tac Mints, Ferrero Rocher Chocolates and Nutella Hazelnut Spread,” Hershey president and chief executive officer John Bilbrey said. “Collaborative supply chain operations are a growing trend across industries as companies seek to fully leverage their logistics infrastructure. Although we are initially focusing on one region of our business, we are excited about the full potential of this project."

Hershey has long tried to improve its supply chain efficiency and enhance competitiveness. Improvements in productivity will start being seen in 2012. Ferrero's mission is to provide high quality products to customers in the most environmentally conscious way possible. The Hershey-Ferrero alliance does not include any manufacturing, selling or marketing efforts.

Cars and trucks on the roadway are some of the largest producers of carbon dioxide and air pollution. Despite governmental efforts to reduce emissions and embrace hybrid technology, trucks and cars still contribute significant amounts of pollution to the air and use non-renewable fuels.

The alliance between Hershey and Ferrero will increase the companies efforts to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere as well as energy consumption. There will be fewer truck trips needed to move their products to customers.

"We are in the early stages of launching this venture but are already excited about its potential to improve Supply Chain operations. And Hershey is the ideal partner to work with us to achieve this goal,” said Giuseppe D'Angelo, area manager for the Ferrero Anglo/Americas region.

Ferrero is the fourth largest confectionery company in the world and is active in several CSR initiatives. The company wants to reduce direct and indirect greenhouse emissions by 30 percent from transportation and storage sources.

The Hershey Company is the largest producer of quality chocolate in North America and a global leader in chocolate and sugar confections with headquarters in Hershey, Pa. The Hershey Company has operations throughout the world and more than 13,000 employees. With revenues of about $6 billion, Hershey offers a wide range of confectionery products, including Hershey's, Reese's, Kisses, Hershey's Bliss, Special Dark, Hershey's Syrup, Kit Kat, Twizzlers, Ice Breakers, PayDay and Jolly Rancher.
