Shakira and Costa Cruises Launch Colombia School Project
(3BL Media/Justmeans) – Colombian-born pop star Shakira launched a new project by her Fundación Pies Descalzos during a ceremony in Barcelona, Spain. The NGO got a financial boost from Costa Cruises to help economically excluded children get access to education and improve their economic prospects.
The new school will be built in the Cartagena region in Colombia and is expected to be finished and delivered by June 2019. The school will reach around 1,300 local students aged 6-18 years.
The school will follow Pies Descalzos’s public quality education model, which includes nutrition and health programs for not only students, but also parents and the community around the school.
In order to comply with the standard, the center will feature state-of-the-art facilities, a library, auditorium, dining hall, an early childhood and sports areas, labs and more than 40 classrooms and halls.
During the launch party, Costa Cruises president Neil Palomba gave Shakira a brick to symbolize the happiness of launching the project. The brick will eventually be taken to the site of the school on a cruiser travelling between Barcelona and Cartagena. During the journey, crew and guests will get the chance to leave messages.
Shakira launched Fundación Pies Descalzos in 1997 to promote quality education for children in Colombia. The singer has already collaborated with the cruise company on the Happiness Squared campaign launched in 2015. The company also supports other social and sustainability projects such as Mercy Ships, which provides medical services in Africa, and other socially responsible actions in Asia and Europe.
