People don’t like insecure, know it alls who think they have a better solution. Take your time and get to know people. I suggest you specifically make notes of who knows who, chain of command and communication, people’s likes and dislikes and over all culture of your organization.

Another action is to clarify what your job expectations are and what you are required to accomplish. Do not assume that job description you got is the only way you will be evaluated in your first 30 days. Get smart and work fast by identifying what will make you a valuable employee. Identify the top 3 things you can begin to work on that will generate tangible, visible results that you can report to your supervisor. If there isn’t a formal review structure like a probationary period, weekly meetings or email reports to your supervisor then develop your own. I always recommend to my clients that they develop a weekly action accountability sheet that includes these items: 1. What tasks you completed 2. What did you accomplish that may have saved the company time or money 3. What you are doing; your personal professional task list of open items and 4. Any specific resources, questions needing answered, or support from your supervisor or the team.

By putting this in writing you keep your own records for evaluation, raises, and your resume.

As I shared earlier in a blog about boundaries it’s important to manage what you choose to disclose and broadcast about yourself. Review that blog to learn of specific areas to be mindful of. What is important here is that people form impressions about you after only 5-7 seconds. Take the time to think ahead to identify the image and brand you want to develop. I suggest you create three areas to begin with and monitor how it is received. Some areas might include: dress, mannerism, meeting etiquette, offering value to colleagues, voicemail, email and written presence, etc.

Take time in the first few weeks to identify someone who you can relate with and who you feel has your back or could; once they know you better. This person would be your champion. This is someone who sings your praises, talks positively about you, takes you under their wing and is kind of like a mentor. It’s easier to find out about the unwritten rules by someone who has walked in your shoes and is further along than you. In addition identify people you can be kind and considerate of and be willing to be a champion for. As you receive you also want to give back. It’s better to be seen as generous, efficient, and a team player than not to be.

As your fast track in your new job continues to move forward I recommend as I coach and consult with clients to keep your network active and engaged. Keep blogging, updating your Face book, LinkedIn, profiles. It’s also important to attend networking functions representing yourself and your new company. If you haven’t sent a thank you note to everyone who helped you or better yet sponsor a reception to thank everyone I suggest you do that in your first 30-60 days. Everyone loves to be thanked and included in your success. Additionally, you never know what may lie ahead. Take care to build rapport, relations, and your network.
