Black & Veatch: Food, Beverage Companies Increasingly Eye Sustainability to Improve Operations, Bottom Line

Poll of Food Engineering Magazine readers shows industry looking to boost efficiency, reduce energy use and lower environmental impact
Press Release

OVERLAND PARK, Kan., October 19, 2021 /3BL Media/ – As consumers and investors demand a greater focus on sustainability a new report finds the food and beverage industry setting more aggressive sustainability goals but still deferential to the bottom line. The Black & Veatch – Clear Seas Research report highlights the industry’s quest to increase efficiency, lower energy usage, and quell or upcycle byproduct waste despite a lack of in-house expertise to set and execute sustainability goals. At the same time, pressures to grow revenue and maintain profit margins complicate matters.

Reducing Fire Risk for Battery Energy Storage Systems and Electric Vehicles

During Fire Prevention Week, WSP fire experts are drawing attention to the rapid growth of alternative energy storage batteries and the need to address fire hazards.
Article

As part of the quest to decarbonize, energy utilities and electric power producers are rapidly increasing the proportion of energy generated with wind and solar resources.

Because wind and solar are intermittent, there is a parallel push to install large-scale batteries to store surplus electricity at times of low demand and dispatch it during periods of high demand.

However, the rapid growth in large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) is occurring without adequate attention to preventing fires and explosions.

5G Energy Consumption: What's the Impact of 5G NR in Real Networks?

Summary:

The ultra-lean design of 5G NR can drastically decrease network-energy consumption compared to any previous cellular standard, including 4G LTE. Reaping the benefits of the standard will make it possible to optimize the energy usage for a network, even allowing a combined 2G, 3G, 4G and full 5G deployment to consume less total energy than a corresponding network without 5G. Find out how.

Countries and companies must undertake aggressive decarbonization measures if they hope to align with the Paris Agreement and limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Initial emissions reduction plans typically include proven technologies and solutions such as investing in solar and wind power, energy efficiency and electric vehicles. But the evasive, final stretch when the low-hanging fruit already has been picked can present the biggest challenges.

Long-Duration Energy Storage: The Catalyst for a Sustainable Energy Future

Words by Tina Casey
Article

New energy storage technologies are surging into the market, as business leaders and policymakers seek to address climate change, support renewable energy, and create a more reliable and resilient grid. However, not all energy storage solutions are the same. The global economy faces multiple challenges in addition to climate change. To foster long-term sustainability at a holistic level, energy storage should support reliability and security while benefitting people and the planet, including historically disadvantaged communities.
