A History of Commitment to West African Cocoa Communities

Approximately 73% of the world’s four million tons of cocoa is produced by more than two million cocoa farmers in West Africa.

Many of my chocolate and cocoa company members have been providing assistance to these farmers since the early to mid-1900s, none more than The Hershey Company which began to purchase cocoa from West Africa in 1930 and in 1948 was a founding member of an organization I formerly headed, the American Cocoa Research Institute.

It is a decision applauded by The Humane Society of the United States, which says the shift will improve the welfare of nearly 150,000 hens annually.

The honorees who were formally recognized on June 14 at the 13th Annual Sodexo Foundation Dinner in Washington, D.C., were presented with a $5,000 grant awarded in their name to the hunger-related charity of the honoree’s choice.

A new video about PepsiCo’s inaugural PepsiCorps program gives associates an up-close view of the PepsiCorps team’s journey and accomplishments. The video, shot on location in Ghana, highlights how team members worked with local stakeholders to increase access to clean water, promote eco-tourism and improve sanitation.

The eight inaugural team members also share how the experience helped them develop leadership skills such as active listening, understanding issues from multiple perspectives and developing insights into local needs.
