Which US City Leads in Sustainable Design?

Quick: name the US city that represents the cutting edge of sustainable design. How many did you think of before getting the right answer: Washington D.C.? Yes, the nation’s capital, home of a current administration that is openly hostile to environmentally friendly issues from renewable energy to climate change, is by far the country’s leader in sustainable design, reports Huffington Post. Earlier this year, the US Green Building Council ranked states by the number of buildings certified through its LEED system, and D.C. came out on top. The federal district’s per capita number of certified green buildings was eight times that of the top state (Massachusetts). Since the built environment accounts for nearly half of all energy and emissions, D.C. is taking on climate change with full force, despite current eco-unfriendly policies.
