This week is your last chance to register for AIAG's second annual Corporate Responsibility Summit, “Integrating Sustainability into Your Business Plan and Practices.” Next week’s event on Wednesday, April 24 – Thursday, April 25 will provide the information needed to take your company’s sustainability efforts to the next level. Don't miss this opportunity to engage thought leaders and practitioners on current issues, as well as those on the horizon.

The Summit is tailored to those working on CR and sustainability, environmental sustainability, or global purchasing and supply chain, but there’s something for everybody, so don’t miss your chance to get in on the action. Here’s a bit of what you can look forward to:

Training – Breakout Sessions

  • CR 101 will explain the main elements of sustainability and how companies meet the rising expectations of customers, regulators, investors, and other stakeholders as they integrate sustainability. The audience will be engaged to develop a common understanding of modern sustainability practices and their relevance to business. Using real-world examples, the session will introduce several important sustainability issues, including strategy and prioritization, internal governance, supply chain, stakeholder engagement, reporting, and transparency. David Korngold - Business for Social Responsibility (BSR).
  • CR 201 will explore methods and case studies for integrating sustainability into business operations. Topics in this interactive session will include supply chain sustainability, creating internal alignment with global teams, innovative stakeholder engagement, and effective transparency. Best practices will be identified and explored, drawing from the experiences and challenges of attendees. Raj Sapru – BSR.
  • Overview of AIAG CR Training for Suppliers. Professionals in supply chain, purchasing, compliance, operations, and sustainability will leave with increased awareness of the industry’s commitment to ensure decent working conditions, ethical behavior, and environmental responsibility. Marilyn Smith – General Motors Company; Jenna Pires – Intertek Supplier Management.

Global Reporting Initiative: Executive Overview. An executive-level overview of the consensus-based, globally recognized Sustainability Reporting Framework developed by GRI, which allows users to produce transparent, fully-disclosed reports on environmental, social, and governance performance. The session will cover the basics: components of the GRI Framework, key characteristics of a GRI report, and requirements for a GRI report at different application levels. To support adoption of the GRI Sustainability Reporting Framework among its members, AIAG offers a series of GRI trainings. Look for information on the three-course GRI training series elsewhere in this newsletter. Barbara Brown and Cora Lee Mooney – BrownFlynn.

Strategies for CR/Sustainability Regulations. Get the latest updates on the release of the G4 KPIs and the Auto Sector Supplement. Manufacturers and suppliers face the challenge on inconsistent standards for requesting and reporting information throughout the global supply chain. As a GRI Organizational Stakeholder, AIAG joins the global network of companies and organizations that are committed to transparency, accountability, and sustainable development, and is working with members to form a collective voice of influence on the next series of GRI indicators, automotive sector supplements, and other initiatives. Marjella Alma – Global Reporting Initiative – Focal Point USA; Mary McDonald, McDonald Consulting Group (JCI).

Interactive Discussions: Take a Closer Look.

Industry Materiality Assessment: Camshafts to Coffee Beans. The AIAG CR Steering Committee is conducting an industry materiality assessment to prioritize impacts on the industry.  Learn how others are using strategic sustainability planning to effect change and actions. Brooke Beadle – Novelis, Inc.; Jeff Erikson – SustainAbility Ltd.; Thomas Niemann – Ford Motor Company.

Sustainable Business + Innovation = Societal Benefit. Jay Wilber – Goodwill’s Green Works; Veronika Scott - The Empowerment Plan.

Globally Harmonized System (GHS). The U.S. has adopted the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) developed by the United Nations. Companies that manufacture, distribute, import, export, and/or are downstream users of chemicals or preparations will need to adapt, and AIAG’s GHS work group is working to help the automotive industry supply chain manage these updated requirements. MIOSHA will provide a GHS training overview for professionals in HSE, chemical regulatory, logistics, and purchasing, and Sitehawk will facilitate and participate in the Q & A with input from moderator Stephen Friedeck. Kristin Osterkamp – Michigan Occupational Safety & Health Administration (MIOSHA); Stephen Friedeck – Freudenberg-NOK Sealing Technologies; Jason Massey – SiteHawk.

Global Supply Chain Transparency. Global supply chain transparency has moved beyond the standard energy and greenhouse gas emissions reporting, with organizations and the federal government seeking more information from supply chains. This expansion covers more of the core CSR metrics, including labor practices, community involvement, employee engagement, and sustainability scorecards and strategies. In addition to a practical overview of how organizations are tackling this issue, a speaker will provide best practices and an overview from non-automotive global organizations. Guidance documents that can help organizations make a plan will be reviewed. Greg L. Szczesny – PwC.

Industry of the Future. A futurist’s view of what is ahead for the industry. Timothy Anness – Chrysler Group LLC.
