TORONTO, February 9, 2021 /3BL Media/ – Global Compact Network Canada (GCNC) has launched the Principles-Based Sustainable Recovery for Canadian Businesses guide, recognizing the importance of #UnitingBusiness in light of disruptions caused by COVID-19, by structuring a sustainable path to recovery for the Canadian private sector.

Aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Goal 17, “Partnership for the Goals”, government, corporate, and civil society leaders have worked together to identify concrete steps organizations can take towards building resilient business strategies to recover from the pandemic. GCNC’s successful webinar series, Business Continuity Through the Lens of the SDGs led to the creation of the Principles-Based Sustainable Recovery for Canadian Businesses working group, which is based on the UN Global Compact’s Ten  Principles. Focused on identifying solutions for Canadian Businesses to help them build back better, this guide offers a series of recommendations that can further enable companies to embed sustainability into their business strategies.

Bringing together a group of dedicated expert representatives from the network, this guide was created over the course of several months and a series of impactful virtual workshops, in collaboration with GCNC. Together, the working group created an outline that would (1) explore the Sustainable Development Goals implications of COVID-19 (2) identify concrete steps companies can take to embed the sustainability principles into their recovery responses and (3) identify special considerations for sustainability reporting.

"COVID-19 has made it evident that when businesses unite, they can be a powerful force for good by upholding certain principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption,” commented Ayman Chowdhury, Head of Secretariat of Global Compact Network Canada. “A recovery approach from this pandemic without having sustainability at its core will not guarantee resilience to future shocks."

Built on the framework of multiple initiatives and designed to offer guidance and support to the Canadian private sector, this guide will continue to serve Canadian organizations as they navigate through the challenges of economic recovery. With the expertise of the Canadian network, the UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles, the Sustainable Development Goals, this guide is an excellent resource for understanding how sustainability can be utilized as the core framework for building back better.
