Alaska Airlines Joins Ceres Company Network

May 23, 2019 /3BL Media/ Ceres, the sustainability advocacy organization, and Alaska Airlines, a fuel efficiency pioneer in the airline industry, announced today that Alaska has joined the Ceres Company Network.

As a new member of the Ceres Company Network, Alaska Airlines joins approximately 50 companies, including dozens of Fortune 500 firms, committed to achieving sustainability goals and improving resiliency in their operations and supply chains. Through the network, Alaska Airlines will gain unique access to a breadth of external perspectives and Ceres’ guidance to advance the ongoing transition to a more sustainable, low-carbon economy.

"To us, sustainability means running our business in a way that is responsible to all who depend on us, for the long term.” said Diana Birkett-Rakow, Vice President of External Affairs at Alaska Airlines. "Being efficient is in our DNA, and programs like inflight recycling were started by our employees. We are proud to have taken significant steps to advance the energy efficiency of our fleet, reduce waste from our inflight service, embed our strong safety culture across all aspects of the organization, and invest in our people and the communities around us. And there is more to do. We look forward to working with Ceres and its members collectively to continue to deliver on those goals."

For the past two years, Alaska Airlines has ranked No. 1 for North American aviation on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and has received top scores for corporate governance and efficiency. The company has identified the reduction of aircraft emissions as a top strategic priority for the business and works collaboratively with other airlines to address the sector’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. To that end, the company has ambitious goals around sustainable aviation fuel, reduction of inflight waste to landfill, and reduction of paper consumption.

"Alaska Airlines recognizes that the creation of long-term shareholder value depends on paying deliberate attention to the environmental and social issues that their stakeholders care about, from the emissions generated during flight operations to ensuring equity throughout the workforce,” said Mindy Lubber, president and CEO of Ceres. “I look forward to working with the team at Alaska Airlines as they continue to integrate sustainability into their business strategy as a way to manage risk and take advantage of new opportunities.”

To join the Ceres Company Network, members must have executive-level, public-facing sustainability commitments. Learn more: https://www.ceres.org/networks/ceres-company-network.
