September 9, 2014 /3BL Media/ - Today, the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) presented its 2014 highway safety awards to programs focusing on the nation’s most pressing highway safety problems at its Annual Meeting in Grand Rapids, Michigan. AT&T received the 2014 Peter K. O’Rourke Special Achievement Award in recognition of outstanding highway safety accomplishments last year for the It Can Wait movement against texting while driving.

This past year, AT&T invited more than 1,500 organizations to join the movement, and now, more than 2,500 organizations have gotten involved. The movement has prompted more than 1.5 million downloads of the AT&T DriveMode® and inspired more than five million pledges to never text and drive.

Andrea Brands, Director of Consumer Safety and Education, accepted the award on behalf of AT&T and encouraged state highway safety offices to get involved with It Can Wait – especially leading up to the third annual day of action on September 19th. In just ten days, advocates across the country will gear up to get #X – shorthand to pause text conversations – out and share tools drivers can use to help avoid the temptation to text and drive.

We’re proud of the impact we’ve made, but know there is still work to be done to end this epidemic. Join us on September 19th to help keep the momentum going and make texting while driving a problem of the past.
