LEMONT, Ill., November 17, 2017 /3BL Media/ - CITGO Lemont Refinery and the Village of Lemont and Lemont Environmental Advisory Commission partnered to host the semi-annual fall Recycling Day on Oct. 14. The event provided an opportunity for community residents to drop off unwanted recyclable items and household waste.

The CITGO Lemont Refinery has co-sponsored this event with the Village of Lemont for more than 15 years, and this time, CITGO Lemont volunteers collected approximately 485 gallons of motor oil and 90 gallons of flammable liquids. Volunteers also collected fluorescent lamps and batteries.

Recycling Day promotes the importance of keeping land and waterways free of harmful substances, aligning with the mission and commitment of CITGO to act as an environmentally sound neighbor. Vice President and General Manager of the CITGO Lemont Refinery Jim Cristman said CITGO values environmental stewardship and the communities where it operates. “By having a place to take these items, not only is household waste disposed of responsibly, but the collected materials can also be recycled,” he said.

CITGO is committed to safeguarding the environment we all share, for today and generations to come. In addition to numerous employee-driven environmental efforts, the company invests in long-term environmental programs that are dedicated to the restoration of natural habitats and promoting energy efficiency.

About the CITGO Lemont Refinery
For over 90 years, CITGO Lemont Refinery has employed more than 750 Chicago area residents on a full-time and contract basis in support of the local economy. In addition to producing high quality fuels for a large portion of the network of nearly 5,500 independently and locally-owned CITGO stations across the country, Lemont Refinery employees also make a major positive impact on the community. Each year, more than 2,500 volunteer hours and thousands of dollars are given in support of community programs such as Muscular Dystrophy Association, United Way and a variety of environmental and preservation programs. Operations at the Lemont Refinery began in 1925 with a major expansion, doubling the facility, in 1933. Over the years, new units were added to meet the demand for a better quality of gas for automobiles, aviation fuel for WWII, and the production of asphalt.
