CITGO STEM Scholarships Help Houston Students Pursue Higher Education

HOUSTON, September 13, 2017 /3BL Media/ – CITGO Petroleum Corporation awarded scholarships to 20 Houston students who plan to pursue a university-level degree in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). As part of a long-term commitment to furthering STEM education across the country, CITGO granted scholarships to exceptional students who demonstrate the potential to take the STEM industry to the next level following their educational pursuits. 

“CITGO and its STEM scholarships allow us to reward hardworking, talented students and encourage them to reach their full potential,” said Trina Harmon-Wright, college success manager with Houston ISD College Readiness. “We hope to continue empowering Houston students, with the help of CITGO, by providing them with the tools they need to excel in the classroom as well as life after graduation.” 

CITGO recognized a diverse group of students from schools throughout Houston. Scholars represent the following high schools:

  • Carnegie Vanguard High School
  • César E. Chávez High School
  • East Early College High School
  • The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA)
  • Jane Long Academy
  • Lamar High School 
  • James Madison High School
  • Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men
  • Charles H. Milby High School 
  • North Houston Early College High School
  • Sharpstown High School 
  • Sharpstown International School
  • Stephen Pool Waltrip High School 
  • Westside High School
  • Margaret Long Wisdom High School

“CITGO is committed to ensuring that students in the Houston area are able to pursue their passions and receive the education they deserve, and these STEM scholarships are part of that effort,” said Rafael Gomez, CITGO vice president of government and public affairs. “Our hope is these students will be able to focus on building the skills they need to reach their full potential in the years to come.”

CITGO continues to partner with numerous organizations through the CITGO STEM Talent Pipeline Educational Program to help strengthen STEM education around the country. In the Houston area, CITGO has partnered with nonprofit Girlstart to bring afterschool STEM-related programs to students, encouraging girls to pursue careers in STEM. Additionally, CITGO supported the University of Houston-Downtown Summer Camp, providing a new education module to help middle and high school students learn STEM topics in an innovative way.
