BT has appointed Niall Dunne as its new Chief Sustainability Officer. Dunne will direct the British telecom company’s climate change and sustainable development strategy. He has previously led sustainability practices at Saatchi and Saatchi, and chaired industry initiatives, including the Sustainable Consumption Project Board for the World Economic Forum. BT has a gold status ranking in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and “Platinum Plus” level in the Business in the Community Corporate Responsibility Index.
The Alcoa Foundation has created a $4 million program to fund environmental sustainability research at 15 universities and NGOs worldwide. The projects are in materials science, energy, natural resource management and engineering, and sustainable design. Funds have been awarded to universities in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Russia, Spain, and to Ohio State University and the University of Michigan in the U.S. The data produced will be published online and distributed to other researchers.
