De Blasio Administration Delivers 10,000 Internet-Connected Devices and Digital Support to Older Nycha Residents

As part of Mayor de Blasio’s Equity Action Plan and in rapid response to COVID-19, the City has provided internet-connected devices to older adults in public housing communities

NEW YORK — The Mayor’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer (MOCTO) and the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) partnered with T-Mobile and LG Electronics USA to provide internet-connected tablets to older New Yorkers who live in NYCHA communities. Through the Department for Aging (DFTA) and Older Adults Technology Services (OATS), the City is also helping recipients set up and learn how to use their devices to access free classes, resources, and essential services, as well as to engage with friends and family.

The New York City Internet Master Plan showed that 18% of New Yorkers, or 1.5 million people, have neither a home nor a mobile internet connection. The City recognizes that older New Yorkers who are low-income and without affordable internet connectivity options are unable to access information or services and have a higher risk of being negatively impacted by COVID-19. 

“Technology is a lifeline for homebound seniors especially now, and LG is proud to partner with T-Mobile and the City of New York to help our neighbors in need during these trying times,” said Thomas Yoon, President & CEO, LG Electronics North America.
