LAS VEGAS, September 13, 2018 /3BL Media/ – Las Vegas Sands (NYSE: LVS) and Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth (NPHY) announced the second annual Southern Nevada Youth Homelessness Summit will be held Friday, Nov. 2 at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas, culminating a year-long, community-wide effort to build the region’s first-ever Southern Nevada Plan to End Youth Homelessness, which will be unveiled at the summit.

Themed The Movement in Action, Summit 18 will both highlight the work done over the last year to create the plan, as well as provide inspirational presentations to mobilize the community toward ending the region’s chronic and significant youth homelessness problem. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) 2017 Annual Homeless Assessment Report, Clark County had the third highest number of unaccompanied homeless youth, following Los Angeles and San Jose, and Nevada had the highest rate of unsheltered unaccompanied youth with 89 percent staying in places not meant for human habitation.

Last year’s Summit launched The Movement to End Youth Homelessness in Southern Nevada – a comprehensive, community-wide effort to address youth homelessness from all avenues. As part of The Movement, service providers, policymakers, civic and business leaders have participated in a multi-level planning process over the past year to create the Southern Nevada Plan to End Youth Homelessness.  The Plan is being developed through facilitation by national experts and input from a wide range of community partners, representing the first coordinated, directed, community-wide response to youth homelessness in the Las Vegas Valley.

"For a region our size to have this large of a problem demonstrates not only tremendous need, but challenges with service delivery and community coordination,” said Arash Ghafoori, Executive Director of NPHY.  “The Movement is changing that. The number of organizations and individuals that have come to the table is amazing, and I believe we have a turnaround story in the making. We appreciate the partnership of Las Vegas Sands to join with NPHY as the catalysts for this comprehensive youth homelessness effort.”

Summit 18 is the region’s leading event addressing youth homelessness and brings together experts, advocates and former homeless youth to share ideas, stories and solutions.  This year’s Summit will cover:

  • The unveiling of the first-ever Southern Nevada Plan to End Youth Homelessness built through the facilitation by national experts and input from a wide range of community partners
  • An overview of the progress made by The Movement to End Youth Homelessness in Southern Nevada
  • An analysis of the impact youth homelessness has on our community by the UNLV Greenspun College of Urban Affairs
  • Personal stories and activities led by current and former homeless youth
  • An inspiring keynote address by a national leader
  • Action-oriented breakout sessions on legislative policy, fundraising, systems collaboration, innovative housing/service models, and private/public sector partnerships

“We have pledged significant involvement to make an impact in youth homelessness, and we encourage our colleagues in the business community and local civic leaders to do the same by joining this year’s Summit and learning about how they can take a role in the plan,” said Ron Reese, senior vice president of global communications and corporate affairs at Las Vegas Sands.  “We can solve this problem with the full power of our community behind it.”

Summit 18 is presented by Sands Cares, the corporate giving and community engagement program of LVS, and NPHY, with support from the UNLV Greenspun College of Urban Affairs and the Las Vegas Review-Journal.  For more information, please visit: nphy.org/summit18
