CENTENNIAL, Colo., July 22, 2021 /3BL Media/ - Girls Inc. of Metro Denver has graduated the first class of participants in its Eureka! program, offering middle and high school girls the opportunity to learn about and explore careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Arrow Electronics is a sponsor of the intensive, five-year program, which includes summer coursework on a college campus, two paid internships, travel experience and monthly engagement activities during the school year.

Eureka! was designed to encourage girls to study STEM at a time in their academic careers when many female students tend to lose interest in those subjects due to peer pressure and a lack of female role models. Six in 10 girls admitted they'd feel more confident pursuing a STEM career if they knew men and women were already equally employed in these fields, according to a study by Microsoft.

“Supporting efforts like Eureka! is absolutely vital in helping to connect young women to female professionals in STEM and showing them the vast careers that are possible with a STEM education,” said Kristin Russell, president of Arrow’s Global Enterprise Computing Solutions.

Girls in the Eureka! program served as interns at Lockheed Martin, for example, where they completed tasks regarding moon habitat creation, 3-D printing, manufacturing solutions and satellite industry research.

Program participants are also eligible to apply for college scholarships through Girls Inc. of Metro Denver and the national Girls Inc. organization. The Girls Inc. of Metro Denver affiliate awarded $65,000 in scholarships to nine girls in May.

Arrow is committed to providing opportunities to girls and young women to build technology and innovation skills. The company has worked with Girl Scouts of Colorado in the past to help members earn technology-oriented badges and is a longtime sponsor of Girls and Science, an annual education event hosted by the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to inspire girls to pursue careers in STEAM (science, engineering, arts and math).
