Press Release

(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) April 13, 2011 - ING employees are celebrating National Volunteer Week, April 10 – 16, and Earth Day, April 22, through volunteerism projects and awareness activities. With approximately 8,500 employees in major cities across the United States, ING will partner with nonprofit organizations to address community needs and promote environmental consciousness among employees. Employees are volunteering to mentor students, teach financial literacy programs, deliver meals to the homebound and beautify area communities. Encouraging employees to bike, carpool and use public transportation to get to work, participate in “lights-out hours,” recycle, and sponsor organic gardening, composting, and green cleaning seminars are among the activities planned to increase employees’ awareness of how collective efforts can help mitigate their impact on the environment.

“ING’s national volunteer and environmental teams are helping to engage employees year-round to make a difference in our community by addressing some of our most pressing social issues,” says Rhonda Mims, president of the ING Foundation and senior vice president, ING’s Office of Corporate Responsibility and Multicultural Affairs. “Rallying employees in April to recognize National Volunteer Week and Earth Day allows us to combine efforts and focus our volunteerism and environmental activities in a bigger way in addition to our regular activities throughout the year.”
ING demonstrates its commitment to the environment through its Orange Goes Green campaign. The company is not only investing in green energy and employee-awareness programs, but also taking a holistic approach by engaging areas across the business in identifying opportunities from purchasing to green cleaning to waste reduction programs to become more environmentally conscious. Some measurable results include:
  • 17% reduction in energy consumption across U.S. locations since 2007.

  • 27% (130 tons) reduction in copy paper purchasing in 2010.

  • 62% (798 tons) of generated waste recycled.
