OMAHA, Neb., December 20, 2013 /3BL Media/ – Grants from Lincoln Financial Foundation are helping to encourage entrepreneurism and promote adult and financial literacy in Omaha.  Lincoln Foundation recently awarded $152,500 in economic and workforce development grants to six local nonprofit organizations, a portion of $846,600 in charitable funds it has allocated to Omaha in 2013.

The Chicano Awareness Center, also known as the Latino Center of the Midlands, received $25,000 for its Adult Basic Education program, which emphasizes computer training for Spanish speaking adults.  This education program promotes computer use and employability by offering Spanish GED and pre-GED classes and tutoring services; essential employment skill-building courses; and career services including job searches, resume writing and first aid/CPR courses.  Most of the adult students who participate in these classes are immigrants who came from rural small towns or ranches, began work as children to assist their impoverished families, and therefore could not attain a high school education.  The Adult Basic Education programming offers these students high-touch assistance to guide them through the GED testing process and employment application process.

Other economic and workforce development grants awarded include:

  • $47,500 to Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce Foundation for a variety of entrepreneurial programming to educate student entrepreneurs and help adult entrepreneurs connect with and learn from each other, from other local businesses and from renowned business and university leaders across the country.
  • $30,000 to Greater Omaha Alliance for Business Ethics for the Entrepreneurship Program, which targets start-ups and small businesses to demonstrate the impact of defining intentional organization values, and the Great Cities Index, which assesses the ethical climate of a city's business community.
  • $25,000 to Family Housing Advisory Services to provide financial literacy education and asset-building services, including financial management workshops, individual budget counseling and credit report counseling, to low- to moderate-income people in the Omaha area.
  • $15,000 to Metropolitan Community College Foundation to support the 2014 Heartland Student Entrepreneur Conference for middle, high school and college students to help them understand their talents and entrepreneurship.
  • $10,000 to Youth Care & Beyond to teach developmentally delayed individuals the skills needed to apply for and retain jobs, develop budgets and other critical life skills.
