Lincoln Foundation Strengthens Omaha Education

Omaha, Neb., June 19, 2013 /3BL Media/ – Lincoln Financial Foundation is helping to strengthen educational programming in Omaha through $217,500 in recent grants to 14 local nonprofit agencies.  These grants are a portion of more than $846,600 in charitable funds the foundation has allocated for Omaha in 2013.

Lincoln Financial awarded the YMCA of Greater Omaha $25,000 for its Y-Teens Afterschool Mentoring programs in low-income areas of Omaha.  These programs provide mentors, homework space and tutoring, as well as enrichment activities and peer discussion groups. 

Y-Teen mentors work closely with students to increase academic success, high school graduation rates and personal skills.  Y-Teen programs also help students focus on developing and enhancing their natural leadership ability.

Other education grants awarded include:

  • $25,000 to Child Saving Institute for its Independent Living Skills program, which equips youth ages 16-19, who are at risk of aging out of foster care, with knowledge, skills and a support system to graduate from high school and live independently.
  • $25,000 to Durham Museum for its Scholars in Residence Education Series, supporting national heritage months, and for the Goose Bumps! The Science of Fear exhibition.
  • $25,000 to Omaha Children’s Museum to support field trips to the museum for Title 1 schools to facilitate hands-on learning.
  • $18,000 to Junior Achievement to support financial literacy programs in elementary schools.
  • $15,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands for community-based mentoring for children at risk of academic failure.
  • $15,000 to Girls Incorporated of Omaha for GirlSTART, a literacy program for girls in kindergarten through second grade.
  • $12,500 to Heartland Family Service for the Ready in 5 program to help refugees and caregivers prepare pre-kindergartners for success in school.
  • $12,000 to Completely Kids to support academic enrichment programs with a service learning component for at-risk youth.
  • $10,000 to Fontenelle Nature Association for its Environmental Expeditionary Learning Initiative, providing students in grades 2-6 with courses at the Fontenelle Forest Nature Center or the Neale Woods Nature Center.
  • $10,000 to Girl Scouts, Spirit of Nebraska, for My Summer Place, a summer camp program for girls entering grades 1-9.
  • $10,000 to Kids Can Community Center to increase training and assessment tools for teachers and to fund new curricula that focuses on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).
  • $7,500 to Nebraska Humanities Council for its Prime Time Family Reading Time program, which includes reading, discussion and storytelling to improve reading and comprehension skills of at-risk youth.
  • $7,500 to Partnership for Kids for its summer enrichment and leadership program for middle and high school students.
