Las Vegas, Sept. 25, 2013 /3BL Media/ — Corporate Responsibility (CR) Magazine, a preeminent publication which recognizes America’s most socially responsible chief executives, has named Jim Murren, Chairman & CEO of MGM Resorts International, a 2013 Responsible CEO of the Year Award winner. The annual awards are presented to CEOs across industries that clearly exceed standards in the areas of employee relations, environmental impact, human rights, philanthropy, and corporate responsibility practices.

"In a business landscape where transparency, sincerity and social impact are an ever important business goal, we are pleased to shine a spotlight on a group of individuals and their organizations which exude a commitment to their stakeholders and society,” said Elliot Clark, CEO of SharedXpertise, the Publisher of Corporate Responsibility Magazine. “This recognition is a true reflection of the way these organizations conduct business every day.”

All award winners were nominated by fellow members of the CR community and selected by an independent judging panel comprised of previous winners and other industry leaders.

In determining the winners, judges considered several dimensions of the aforementioned standards including: the scope of the CEO’s impact on their organization and community, the extent to which the CEO drove this initiative, and the individual reputation or professional risk taken by the CEO. Murren is among four other CEOs to receive this year’s award. The other honorees are: Denise Morrison, President & CEO, Campbell Soup Company; John B. Veihmeyer, Chairman & CEO, KPMG LLP; Patrick Prevost, President & CEO, Cabot Corporation; and Marillyn Hewson, President & CEO, Lockheed Martin.

Murren’s leadership has evolved MGM Resorts’ separate diversity, philanthropy and sustainability efforts into a cohesive corporate responsibility framework, and has more deeply integrated them into the company’s mission, culture and operations.  He has strengthened each pillar of the company’s responsibility measures and through the innovative Inspiring Our World cultural show, has extended to all of MGM Resorts’ 62,000 employees an understanding and appreciation of the meaning and impact of the company’s responsibility programs.  Achievements during his tenure include:

Diversity & Inclusion: Among the company’s management ranks, more than 38 percent are minorities and nearly 43 percent are women.  During Murren’s tenure as Chairman & CEO, the company has continued to garner wide recognition for its leading diversity and inclusion initiatives, such as: 40 Best Companies for Diversity (Black Enterprise Magazine), Top 10 Companies for Latinos (DiversityInc Magazine) and Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality (Human Rights Campaign Foundation).

Philanthropy & Community Engagement: Murren’s leadership has motivated employee donors to maintain high levels of giving and community engagement despite the recessionary economy.  During the period of 2007-2013, the employee-driven MGM Resorts Foundation has raised $36.9 million, bringing the total raised since the Foundation’s establishment to more than $54 million to support community nonprofit organizations. Additionally, company employees donated more than 113,000 hours of community service and helped more than 850 nonprofit agencies meet community needs in 2012.

Environmental Sustainability: At more than 18M sq. ft., CityCenter is the largest LEED® Gold certified development in the world, earning six LEED® Gold certifications from the U.S. Green Building Council. Additionally, fifteen company resorts have achieved the prestigious Green Key rating for environmental conservation from the largest sustainable operations certification body in the world, Green Key Global.
