February 12, 2013 /3BL Media/ - Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) received an Honorable Mention award in the Corporate Community Partnership Category for the utility’s Summer Jobs program at Monday’s PR News Corporate Social Responsibility Awards program in Washington, D.C.

Last summer, 150 underserved teens from Fresno County received valuable career-training, such as resume writing and how to conduct job interviews, as part of a first-time partnership between PG&E and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fresno County. In addition, 55 of those students who live in Fresno and Clovis received paid summer jobs. The program was no-cost for participating businesses, as students were paid a stipend through the PG&E-funded program. The program also supplied students with business-appropriate attire and provided bus tokens for transportation.

The program, funded by a $200,000 grant from the utility and the PG&E Foundation, debuted in Fresno County this past summer. Fresno County, the first market for the pilot program, was selected largely due to the area’s high unemployment. The jobless rate hovers around 17 percent compared to the state’s nearly 11 percent.  The utility plans a broader rollout of the program during summer 2013, and will be making an announcement in the coming weeks.
