(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) July 8, 2011 - Sightsavers is pleased to announce its first sustainability statement, which outlines its commitment to sustainability across the organisation. The statement can be accessed at http://www.reportalert.info/ra/profiles/Sightsavers/2011/?ID=39601.

Sightsavers is an international development organisation which aims to eliminate avoidable blindness and promote equal opportunities for disabled people in developing countries. 90 per cent of all blindness occurs in developing countries where many people cannot access basic health care. Sightsavers works to combat avoidable blindness and supports those whose sight cannot be saved to live more independent lives by providing education, counseling and training. Sightsavers works with local partners in over 30 countries to help the people who need it most, those living in poverty in some of the world's most under-served communities.

The sustainability statement addresses both Sightsavers' programmes and Sightsavers as an organisation and considers organisational aims and objectives in addition to its wider role as a responsible global citizen. The sustainability statement outlines how Sightsavers is working towards sustainability in its practices, as well as detailing its accountability for those practices. To provide external verification of this, Sightsavers has joined the International Non-Governmental Organisations (INGO) Accountability Charter.
