Family-owned Bacardi Limited, the largest privately held spirits company in the world, and Lonely Whale, the award-winning non-profit dedicated to bringing forward courageous ideas that positively impact the health of our ocean, are working together to help rid the environment of single-use plastic. Since June 2018, the two organizations have asked individuals and venues to sign up to ensure #TheFutureDoesntSuck by pledging to eliminate single-use plastic straws.
Bacardi sustainability efforts continue to draw attention, this time in China. DRiNK Magazine, Asia’s leading bar industry website, awarded the campaign the first ever Sustainability Award presented at The DRiNK Magazine Bar Awards (DMBA). A panel of 160 judges selected Bacardi as a leader in adopting a sustainable culture as part of day-to-day operations. Earlier this year, Bacardi launched its global movement, in collaboration with Lonely Whale, to eliminate single-use plastic straws in Shanghai with a media event co-hosted with Cachet Hospitably Group.
The Bacardi Women in Leadership initiative brought fashion to life during a cocktail event for a great cause. The team hosted an “Evening of Art & Fashion” to serve as the official kick-off celebration for the 25th anniversary of Dress for Success Miami, which provides a network of support, professional attire and development tools, to help women thrive in work and in life. The celebration included an exclusive fashion show featuring a Rene by RR collection, from famed Cuban fashion designer Rene Ruiz.
We all are used to them since our childhood, we see them every day when we visit a restaurant, bar or buy juice drinks at a grocery store: Plastic straws. Despite being small, they are one of the major contributors to plastic pollution on land and in the sea.

Sustainability is no longer a little-known cause pushed by a small group of activists. The environment is officially a major player in the drinks industry, factoring into the calculations of big brands. Bacardi is one heavyweight producer leading the charge. The company officially released the results of their three year push towards sustainability and admittedly, it’s pretty impressive. Pushing ahead, Bacardi also announced some ambitious goals to keep up the momentum.
Bacardi Limited announced the compilation of results of its environmental sustainability goals made in 2014 and expanded its “Good Spirited: Building a Sustainable Future” environmental initiative to now encompass the company’s entire Corporate Responsibility (CR) platform.
