In January 2015, a Barclays colleague based in Poole lost her 25-year-old daughter at the hands of a violent partner. This terrible news sent ripples across colleagues in Poole who made it their mission to help tackle domestic violence and raise awareness. Money was raised through the Domestic Violence charity, Stand And Matter, and colleagues connected with Safer Poole, a government run organisation whose aim is to raise awareness of domestic violence within the private sector.

Annabel Jones is an ambassador for the Stroke Association. Suffering from a stroke in 2011 at the age of just 22, Annabel uses her personal experience to support stoke sufferers, raise funds and generate awareness for stroke prevention.

Annabel gained support from her colleagues and has helped to raise in excess of £45,000. She has become a key ambassador for the Stroke Association, highlighting the key issues and challenges stroke survivors face through engaging with the media through newspapers, magazines, radio and local TV to raise publicity for the cause.

Barclays Switzerland Colleagues have effectively partnered with two key charities to offer their time and support to improve the lives of others, in addition to raising 13,000 CHF for local charities. Colleagues support the Clair Bois Foundation, working with people with disabilities to support training and internships. In 2001, Sumita Patnaik, along with her cousin, started Twinkle Academy, a school in the rural village of Kalan, India. The school has grown from three children to 170 in this time, with the first class of seniors soon to graduate. This has had a huge impact on the community and the education of its children. Kalan is 200 miles from the nearest city and when Twinkle Academy was founded none of the children in the village attended school.

To promote digital fluency in the next generation, the Digital Eagles US team successfully co-ordinated and ran monthly coding sessions for students at schools across New York and New Jersey. The team have organised multiple Code Playground events, many of which have targeted low income schools. The sessions teach children the basics of programming using the Scratch language which interfaces to code a video game. The team recruit Barclays volunteers and host training sessions for them.

Team CXWorks partnered with Tech Impact to develop a curriculum for a call centre training programme in Nevada to support unemployed young adults. The team volunteered 250+ hours to deliver vocational training, resulting in employment being secured. In Nevada, almost 10% of young adults aged 16-24 are unemployed. Tech Impact provides workforce development programmes to disadvantaged youths in Wilmington, DE and Las Vegas, NV. Working with Tech Impact, Barclays colleagues created a curriculum for call centre training to establish a hiring pipeline in Nevada.

The Water Challenge team produced one of the most widely read Barclays research reports of 2017, highlighting how the energy industry can help protect water resources. The report, The Water Challenge, Preserving a Global Resource, was published in partnership with Columbia University. The report analyses financial and technical solutions the energy industry can use to lower water-related costs and improve its fresh-water footprint, featuring case studies of companies improving outcomes as a result of these innovative solutions and partnerships.
