As part of its recognition of Jackie Robinson Day, the Players Association announced Friday that its charitable arm, the Players Trust, is making a $42,000 grant to the Jackie Robinson Foundation to provide a college scholarship to a young person in its program.
In view of Robinson’s historic contributions to players of all races and the enduring work of his wife, Rachel, and daughter, Sharon, MLBPA Executive Director Tony Clark said it was fitting that the union increase its commitment to the ideals represented by Robinson, his family and their foundation.
The Hamels Foundation keeps extending its educational outreach
Cole Hamels hasn’t added an inch to his 6-foot-4 frame but his reach through The Hamels Foundation keeps extending its educational mission.
Hamels and his wife Heidi established their charity in 2009 while he was pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies. Six years later, The Hamels Foundation has provided more than $1 million in grants to Philadelphia area schools. Not surprisingly, The Hamels Foundation motto is, “Education is the Answer.”
EVERETT, Wash. — Although they’ve competed with each other from high school up to the Major Leagues, Travis Snider and Steven Souza, Jr. have worked together to help refurbish Cascade High School’s baseball field in their hometown.
Snider and Souza donated $2,500 each to Cascade to update its 20-year-old batting cages and purchase clay materials for the pitching mound and home plate.
It wasn’t long ago that the Rays outfielder was taking batting practice in those same cages. A native of Everett, Souza attended Cascade.
Price kicks in $300,000 for field for disabled kids
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Home was where David Price’s heart was last week when he announced he was donating $300,000 toward a baseball field designed to accommodate disabled kids at the same park he began his ascent as a player.
Twelve Major Leaguers from eight different clubs played in the 2nd annual Sam Fuld SLAMDiabetes Tampa Classic Wiffle ball tournament at the University of South Florida on Dec. 12 to fund camps for children who have Type 1 diabetes.
Chris Archer, Jose Bautista, Chris Colabello, Slade Heathcott, Dan Jennings, Kevin Kiermaier, Andrew Miller, Matt Moore, Logan Morrison, John Ryan Murphy and Denard Span joined Fuld for the tournament.
This holiday season, Bloomberg employees joined forces with the New York Mets and Bike New York to build and distribute 1,000 bicycles for children in need in the five boroughs of New York City. NEWTOWN, Conn. — Matt Barnes this past weekend drew about 125 kids to his third annual youth baseball clinic to promote healing and the rebirth of normalcy in the community where 20 children and six adults were gunned down in a school rampage shooting in December 2012.
Players Trevor Brown, Mike Montgomery and Chad Smith joined Action Team Captains from West Ranch High School when they hosted their annual softball game with the local Special Olympics Sharks earlier this month.
