50 MW wind deal is equivalent to electricity needs of 16 GM sites and warehouses
DETROIT, November 16, 2016 /3BL Media/ — General Motors has made its largest renewable energy procurement to date, purchasing enough wind power to equal the electricity needs of 16 of its U.S. facilities, including business offices in Fort Worth and Austin, Texas, a major assembly and stamping complex in Arlington, Texas, and 13 parts warehouses east of the Mississippi River.
The Chevrolet Bolt EV just received an EPA-estimated range rating of 238 miles per charge. And GM just committed to meet its entire electricity needs at all of its global operations using renewable energy by 2050.

DETROIT, September 14, 2016 /3BL Media/ – General Motors plans to generate or source all electrical power for its 350 operations in 59 countries with 100 percent renewable energy — such as wind, sun and landfill gas — by 2050.
“Establishing a 100 percent renewable energy goal helps us better serve society by reducing environmental impact,” said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra. “This pursuit of renewable energy benefits our customers and communities through cleaner air while strengthening our business through lower and more stable energy costs.”
The renewables industry can use lessons learned from serving big business to get universities off old-school fossil fuel energy.
In 2015, corporations bought roughly 3.2 gigawatts (GW) of electricity from utility-scale renewable energy facilities, which generate power from sources like wind and solar and then pump it into the grid to supply energy to utilities and other customers. Indeed, corporations surpassed utilities last year as the majority buyers of wind power. But universities may be the next big customer for utility-scale renewable energy.
The benefits of clean energy are clear, but procuring renewables can often be a muddy process given up-front investments, long contracts, and the need to build consensus among various internal company departments.
GM’s first renewable energy project dates back to 1995 with landfill gas generation and its first solar array followed 10 years later. Now equipped with 106 megawatts of renewable energy at its global facilities and $80 million in savings as a result, the company shares some of the tips that help ensure a smooth procurement process.
