In the six years I have worked on the Cisco Corporate Affairs team, I have seen firsthand how natural disasters and humanitarian crises impact some of the world’s most vulnerable people.  

From Hurricane Maria devastating the island of Puerto Rico to armed conflicts forcing people to flee countries like Syria and South Sudan – when crises occur, they most often affect already vulnerable communities that lack the resources to respond and recover from them.

Starbucks has been under a harsh spotlight over the past week as attention focuses on a Philadelphia store manager's decision to call police to remove two black men, resulting in them being handcuffed and led from the store. They had been sitting quietly for no more than a minute or two, waiting to start a meeting. One of the men asked to use the restroom. The manager indicated that a purchase was required to do that or to sit in the store.

Sustainability with resiliency is how I think about these two important concepts working together.  Which is why I started to pay more attention to those talking about resiliency and then created a new Resiliency and Communities collection on EarthSayers.tv, voices of sustainability.  At first, I recognized that there is quite a bit out there on personal resiliency. Three years ago I interviewed Raz Mason, who is trained as a chaplain, on the topic of sustainability and resiliency.
