Commitment will accelerate preservation and rehabilitation of forests in Cote d'Ivoire & Ghana
MINNEAPOLIS, November 16, 2017 /3BL Media/ - General Mills joins leading companies in an agreement to end deforestation, protect national parks from illegal cocoa production and develop alternative livelihoods for affected smallholder farmers in Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana. The two countries produce nearly two-thirds of the world’s annual supply of cocoa. The far-reaching joint Frameworks for Action, led by the World Cocoa Foundation, was announced today at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP23) in Bonn, Germany.

Hundreds of people have died in northern Kenya in recent months due to conflict between armed cattle herders and the wildlife conservation community. During my visits to this part of Kenya over the last two years, I was surprised to find livestock in a region renowned for wildlife. The grasslands are home not only to elephants and zebras but also to cows and goats.
The theme of this year’s Earth Day on April 22nd is Environmental and Climate Literacy. The whole world is being called on to educate and learn about climate change – and raise awareness of the immense threat it poses to our planet and its people.

On a recent trip to Brazil, we flew over the Amazon. Looking out the plane window, I saw an ocean of trees blanketing the ground below. But I also saw large patches of land that had been deforested to make way for farmland. And as much as I like to see farmland, since our business depends on sourcing crops from farmers worldwide, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel a real sense of loss at that sight.
