Four years ago, things did not look good for Banneker High School in Fulton County, Georgia, about 15 miles south of Atlanta.

It was performing in the bottom 5 percent of all schools in the state. Six out of 10 students did not graduate. Teacher retention was abysmal, and an estimated 97 percent of students lived in poverty. The future for many of the students was bleak, and they knew it.

Delta Airlines has joined The Climate Registry after completing verification of its greenhouse gas emissions from 2005 through 2010. The airline has lowered its annual emissions by 7.6 million metric tons since 2005, a 17 percent reduction. The decrease was achieved through fuel-saving initiatives such as removing unnecessary weight, installing aircraft winglets, and replacing inefficient aircraft with newer models that produce fewer emissions per passenger.
