A pair of $58,100 shoes are helping bring new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education resources to Bay Area teachers today. The Stephen and Ayesha Curry Family Foundation and DonorsChoose.org hosted a special charitable campaign on eBay this January, auctioning off a pair of custom, game-worn “Moon Landing” Under Armour Curry 6 basketball shoes. The charity campaign raised $58,100, which will fund local teacher requests on DonorsChoose.org, a nonprofit website where teachers request the resources and experiences their students need to succeed.

For years, Christine Hines-McGee, a Pittsburgh Public Schools pre-K teacher, reached into her own pocket to purchase needed classroom supplies. The materials help enhance the learning experiences of her preschool students and provide development opportunities they might not have had otherwise.
Pre-K classrooms are exposing students to technology and a healthy lifestyle with the help of DonorsChoose.org projects and flash funding by the PNC Foundation.
Perhaps one day, a preschooler in Sara Podvasnik’s class will look back at a classroom exercise featuring the Three Little Pigs as the day that sparked their engineering career.
Podvasnik’s class of 15 students, ages 4 and 5, come from a low socioeconomic area in Duquesne City, Pa. “They always come to school; they love learning at this age,” she said.
They’re some pretty great kids, and they deserve to have the same opportunities as kids in more affluent areas. I just want to be able to get any resources I can to help encourage their love of learning.
To enhance early childhood education, PNC recently announced a $5 million initiative with online charity DonorsChoose.org. The program helps pre-K teachers obtain instructionally rich school resources, such as books, art supplies, classroom technology and field trips to child-friendly museums.
Duke Energy is partnering with DonorsChoose.org to help teachers in Ohio, Kentucky, North Carolina and South Carolina fund projects that support literacy programs and foster a growing interest in science and technology fields.
