I think we might have ruined the color green. Which is a shame, because it is one hell of a color.
Seriously, stop and think for a second. I’ll wait – I’ve got all day in fact, seeing as you are reading this at your leisure. I advocate for sustainability, so when I say “green,” what do you think?

Maybe I’m wrong, but I bet you think of some marketing campaign by a company espousing its environmentally friendly practices. If not that, you probably just think of a blue recycling bin (oh, the irony). Those are great things and all, but shouldn’t we mean more than that?

As the UPS Archivist, I spend a lot of time researching documents that reveal our history and the stories of our people.

So in my search through the UPS Archives – while looking for something else I might add – I came across this document from 1933 asking for the funds for three new “Gould Batteries for two ton Walker Electric Trucks.” These new batteries were to replace three “very old and almost useless” batteries in package cars that were serving in New York City at the time.

Last month, Sprint unveiled its latest green initiative - the ecoEnvelope(TM), a two-in-one reusable envelope that allows customers to receive and remit payment using the same envelope.  Sprint, # 3 on Newsweek's 2011 Green Rankings and Forest Ethics honoree, sets a good example to other corporations with its environmental sustainability and ‘intrapreneur’ philosophy to look for innovative resource reduction opportunities in the supply chain.
