Bechtel colleagues, working with the Northern Virginia Professional Chapter of Engineers without Borders-USA, have completed a project in the U.S. state of South Dakota that will help a disadvantaged community finally tackle a problem that’s forced them to truck in bottled water for years.

In Weledi, a town located 330 km from the capital city of Addis Ababa, Bechtel experts in partnership with the local government, NGOs, and community; and Engineers Without Borders, worked together to strengthen the resilience of the community against future health hazards that arose from water contamination.

Through its Engineers Without Borders (EWB) USA Grant Program, Tetra Tech supports projects that help communities in developing countries meet their basic human needs. The grant program provides funding to individual projects with which U.S.-based Tetra Tech associates are involved. The Mkutani, Tanzania, Water Supply Project, run by the EWB Boston Professional Chapter (EWB-Boston), was a 2016 grant recipient.

“The goals of this trip to Samne, Peru, were to complete a full evaluation of the existing water source, to identify alternative water sources, build community relations and to initiate a safe water education program,” said Lindsay Hoggatt, chemical engineer.
