A Season for Learning

The dazzling colors of autumn have already come and gone up in the high country, and although we have been blessed with gorgeous fall weather at Mariposa Meadows thus far, we can see the new snow that is already beginning to stick on the north-facing slopes of the high peaks.

Geothermal Infrastructure; Pay Your Heating Bill to the Water Company?

The day is coming in which cities will no longer allow combustion heating (NYC 80X50; #ONENYC). Cities and governments throughout the world have already, and continue to make similar commitments.

Electrical resistance heating is most easily identified as the same technology that produces warm forced air in a common hair blow-dryer, or the red-hot elements in a toaster. When electrical elements are placed in a heating appliance (such as a water-heater) or ductwork, then we have an electrical resistance heater. The coefficient of performance (COP) for electrical resistance heating is 1.0 COP.  That is the same as saying that electrical resistance is 100% efficient.

Durable Siding Options: Side By Side

Making sustainable siding choices requires looking at many factors: the embodied energy of the product, impact on water and other resources required during manufacturing, local or regional availability, types of finishes used and recycling potential.

NOT TOO LONG AGO, Not too long ago, if you were building a house in this country, there were only three major cladding options—brick, stucco or wood—and the choice was largely determined by your region. After World War II, aluminum siding took center stage, and in the 1980s, vinyl began its ascendancy. Today, the field has expanded. And while vinyl is still king, fiber cement is making inroads, and other cladding options are experiencing a resurgence. Wood, which inspires so many of the alternatives, makes up but a small fraction of the cladding of new homes.

Buttoned-up Basements

A well-waterproofed and insulated basement offers a plethora of benefits, including improved IAQ, occupant health and lower HVAC bills.

While your clients may wish to finish their basements so they can squeeze an extra room or two out of their houses, a properly sealed and insulated basement is more than a nice amenity. In fact, finishing these spaces can support better air quality and lower HVAC costs. -
