OAKLAND, Calif., May 4, 2016 /3BL Media/ — Fourteen startups have been selected to advance to the final stage of the VERGE Hawaii Accelerate pitch competition following a two-week public voting period, during which more than 9,000 votes were cast.
The urgency to address climate change and other environmental challenges has never been greater. And encouragingly, there seems to be a constant and increasing beat of corporate commitments that range from pledging to use more renewable energy to making products that are more environmentally responsible. These wide-ranging commitments provide a clear indication to who is leading, who is partnering, and who may be lagging. What may not be as clear though is the degree to which businesses as a collective force are taking action.
A new whitepaper, Accountability for Climate Action: How Corporations Are Tackling Climate Change, shows that businesses are a powerful force in addressing climate change, with a large majority making commitments to increase energy efficiency, reduce CO2 emissions or increase the use of renewables. Findings show more than 50 percent of large companies offer products differentiated by low carbon footprint or impact on emissions reductions.
Many companies offer products that can be differentiated by carbon footprint or impact on emissions reduction. Industries leading the way include utilities, industrial goods manufacturers and those supplying basic materials.
While it's not uncommon for companies look to their own operations to improve energy efficiency, some may be surprised that more than 70 percent of the largest businesses target internal processes as the most common way to help mitigate #ClimateChange.
