Eric’s family purchased a Habitat for Humanity home in the Florida farming community of Immokalee, Florida, which among many other things, provided stability and quiet. Eric recently earned a full scholarship to Cornell University, where he wants to study business and hotel management and bring his skills back to his hometown. He’s one of a group of Immokalee students who started Taste of Immokalee, a business that highlights their community’s commodities and produces sauces, salsas, and spice products that are now appearing on the shelves of local Publix stores.

Sharda lives in a village in western India, with four walls and a roof over her head. And yet Sharda still did not have a decent place to live.

Like nearly half of her country’s residents, she lacked access to a sanitary toilet.

To raise awareness and inspire action, the United Nations has designated Nov. 19 as World Toilet Day, a day to motivate the global community to address the tremendous needs of families like Sharda’s.

Maria Lucia is a single mother who works full time as a janitor in a hospital to support her 7-year-old daughter Bia. They live in a one-bedroom house in Bomba do Hemeterio, a low-income neighborhood in Recife, the sixth-largest metropolitan area in Brazil.

Before Habitat, their house was small and dark, with little ventilation and natural lighting. The roof was badly damaged from the rain, and the inside of the house was hot and moldy. Bia often had to miss school due to respiratory problems, a common affliction among children who grow up in these kinds of conditions.
